How many wasted years have passed without any research being done for spinal cord injury patients (through embryonic stem cells) because some self righteous "christian" vowed to fight for the rights "babies" who would be "harvested" for the research. This hits VERY close to home for me. I have a sibling who is very "religious" and who ALWAYS sais that stem cell research is unethical - until their spouse got paralyzed (a spinal cord injury) in a bad auto accident. Now, that sibling would do ANYTHING to have the spouse "back to normal" - even have stem cell therapy. IMAGINE THAT. I've always been amazed how people will change their "morals" when something effects them or a loved one.

I have an online friend who doesn't have to "imagine" what it's like to have a spinal injury. She's wheelchair-bound but remains firmly opposed to any form of research that entails the destruction of embryonic human beings. It's rather presumptuous for you to assume that everyone who disagrees with you has led a charmed life, completely free of disease and misfortune.

Why did all these years pass by ignoring the most reliable source of stem cells which is also quite available with little or no moralistic reservations (umbilical stem cells)?

Yup, if all goes well, several years from now embryonic stem cells will catch up to WHERE ADULT STEM CELLS ALREADY ARE.

What is your point here are you saying that we already have something or are you just repeating what others say. First off Adult Stem cells are not that far advance as you are lead to believe but hey nice try. If this works it will open up many new treatments that are not and would not be available.

It amazing how the ignorant like bmmg39 repeatedly overgeneralize a report of success using a method they accept in a individual area or two into a blatant fabrication that applies to all medical application of stem cells.

You obviously no NOTHING about stem cells. Adult stem cells are third rate when compared to embryonic stem cells. This is a widely known and absolutely accepted fact among all scientists. The only people who say otherwise have agendas other than pure science. Let me guess- you have religious issues with embryonic cells. You think throwing them into dumpsters is better than using them to cure our families. Where have been you religious folks while fertility clinics were trashing these embryos for thirty years? Ignorant sods.

Antonio and Spanner: you REALLY ought to learn more about this issue before opining again. Adult stem cells are already treating patients with MS, Parkinson's, cerebral palsy, sickle-cell anemia, juvenile diabetes, and, yes, spinal-cord injury. But thanks for playing.

Johnny, you seem rather uneducated on this issue. Most scientists are moving AWAY FROM embryonic research and TOWARDS adult stem cells and IPSCs. This would include Dr. James Thomson and Dr. Shinya Yamanaka, two top scientists who've expressed ethical reservations about using embryonic stem cells. Are they "religious folks" or "ignorant sods," as well? P.S. -- I'm an agnostic, and my objections are rooted in science -- a topic you obviously "no" (it's actually spelled "know," by the way) nothing about.

Could've happened almost a decade ago if not for Bush.
